SUSTAINABILITY
1
Production Activities

As Koluman Otomotiv Endüstri A.Ş, we have switched to environmentally friendly technology by changing our existing processes in order to contribute to the sustainable ecosystem. Therefore, it is possible to state that the production technology in our facility is in the “Clean Technology” category compared to similar technologies. In this context, a new technological fiber laser machine was invested and energy savings were achieved simultaneously with raw material savings. In order to save raw materials, the laser machine is optionally equipped with a camera, which enables new parts to be cut on the parts that can be used on waste materials.

In addition, robot technology is used in welding and painting processes in production, and unlike routine pollution control, it is possible to prevent and reduce pollution at the source before it occurs. In other words, the waste generated as a result of production is kept to a minimum in this way. The transition to robotics has also resulted in additional energy savings. In the new situation with the Kobetsu Kaizen approach, the busbar capacity is increased by 100% with a different design and the entire process is completed with 8 frames, saving 50% in energy and chemical costs.

Adopting continuous improvement as a principle, Koluman Otomotiv Endüstri A.Ş. has also defined this improvement as an operational activity and announced it under the name of “Kaizen” throughout the company. In this context, activities that contribute to green transformation (reduction of paper output, reduction of carbon footprint, etc.) are also classified as “Green Kaizen” and the management gives awards to the idea owners who make these improvements. “Green Kaizen” is a concept that was first introduced in the industrial literature through Koluman.

As Koluman Otomotiv Endüstri A.Ş. R&D center, we can set a precedent for many projects in the field of environmentally friendly product design, and among these, we would like to underline Turkey's first autonomous road sweeper project. On 10/12/2021, we, as Koluman Otomotiv Endüstri A.Ş. R&D Center, exhibited Turkey's first Autonomous Road Sweeper at the 5th Economy Summit held at Çırağan Palace with the theme of “Green Economy”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rz1BusepLVI

As the sponsor of the panel on “Changing Mobility Ecosystem and Our Autonomous Future” at the same summit, it is possible to state that as a company aiming to raise the awareness we have created on green consensus and sustainable development to higher levels, we have attracted great interest. With this autonomous vacuum cleaner, which is an example of university-industry synergy with artificial intelligence-supported energy saving and low carbon emission, we created the center of attention of the participants

We also carried out R&D center projects in the field of welding by going into more detail on environmentally friendly product design. Minimization of carbon emissions is among our goals with our projects, which are university-industry cooperation projects to reduce welding voltage and number of welds.

2
Energy Saving Activities

As Koluman Otomotiv Endüstri A.Ş., we can emphasize that we are aware of energy efficiency and apply this awareness in the field of energy saving. In particular, unnecessary lighting was prevented by making revisions to the lighting system installations in buildings, thus saving electrical energy. With this method, 80,000kwh of electrical energy was saved annually. Another example is the awareness training given to Koluman employees and the screen savers with this theme on computer screens, as well as turning off light sources and air conditioners that are not used outside working hours. As for natural gas consumption, which is an important factor in saving natural resources, we can add that this consumption was reduced by making changes in the oven operating system in natural gas cooking ovens. With these activities, 4,158 Sm3 savings were achieved in natural gas consumption per year.

Within the scope of saving electrical energy, the lights are automatically turned off in the working areas during lunch breaks and tea breaks. Roof lights are used to maximize the use of daylight and LED luminaires are preferred for lighting. Sinks and corridors are equipped with a sensor system to increase the efficiency of lighting.

In the field of renewable energy use, sunlight is converted into electricity through photovoltaic panels in the camellias in our facility mentioned above. Roof skylights are used to maximize the use of daylight. The electrical energy used is preferred as green energy and is purchased from the relevant supply company as green energy.

Carbon emission is reduced by preferring bicycles instead of using vehicles within the Koluman facility, which is located on a 310 thousand m2 campus with 80 thousand m2 of indoor and 230 thousand m2 of outdoor area.

Regular e-mail deletion activities are organized throughout the factory to reduce the carbon footprint. In addition, 80% of our processes within the factory have been online and physical output has been eliminated. Since data security is also important in a process where technology is at such an advanced level, a disaster recovery center was established to meet this need.

3
Waste Minimization Activities

In terms of waste reduction, various practices are carried out to reduce or minimize the generation of waste within the scope of our activities. For example, wooden pallets used in the transportation of materials used in production are returned to the company from which the product was purchased upon the request of our company as a deposit and used for the shipment of new products. Other non-refundable wooden pallets, wooden baskets and wooden crates are used in stages such as organization and transportation within the factory and contribute to waste reduction.

In order to use less packaged products, tanks and pressurized gas cylinders are used for various gases, diesel oil, etc. chemicals used in our facility, and they are filled or purchased as full-empty exchange.

Within the scope of minimizing waste in production processes, it is possible to prevent waste at the starting point of the work, especially with the robot technology in the welding and painting processes mentioned above.

Efforts to Fight
Climate Change

Natural gas and electric energy (green energy) are used instead of fossil fuels in the fight against climate change. Compressors and motors with high energy efficiency are preferred.

Within the scope of protecting greenery and reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, a tree activity is organized for each employee.

Filters are used in chimneys to minimize the emission of greenhouse gas emissions related to the reduction of industrial emissions.
