Mersin's first R&D Center
With a history of nearly fifty years, Koluman Otomotiv Endüstri A.Ş. rapidly invests in human resources and digitalization with its synchronous approach to technology. The company, which meets today's and future's different segment customer expectations with environmentally friendly products, received the R&D Center certificate on 24.03.2016 after the audit of the Ministry of Industry and Technology within the scope of Law No. 5746. Having Mersin's first R&D Center, Koluman carries out continuous improvement activities to move forward simultaneously with the Industry 4.0 transformation and creates a sustainable ecosystem with the corporate memory created in the field of big data. By expanding its scientific research and laboratory facilities, Koluman advances its operations with fully automated robotic welding and painting technology in line with its value-added production and export targets. With its excellence model, it ensures infrastructure development with original products with high R&D quality.
The company gains significant benefits with the government incentives provided through the R&D center, which can be described simultaneously as “Technopolis without Walls”. The Koluman R&D center, which develops a visionary perspective, is an extremely important point not only in terms of financial incentives but also in terms of developing R&D strategies that affect the future of the company and corporate recognition. Koluman Otomotiv Endüstri A.Ş., which has the vision of “becoming a global brand with world standards as a commercial superstructure and trailer manufacturer”, continues its R&D activities in order to “produce innovative solutions for our customers and create value for all our stakeholders”.
R&D Projects
The Koluman R&D center, which continues its activities with more than forty projects to date, prepares projects for two main product groups: military and civilian. Innovative projects are also being developed in the semitrailer group (tilt/curtain/open body, container carrier, tipper trailer, tanker trailer), truck bodywork (concrete pump, tipper bodywork, vacuum road sweeper, tanker bodywork) and military vehicles. With the feedback received from customers and the industry, focus areas are created that closely follow the technology. Projects are carried out in areas such as advanced material technology, the Internet of Things, big data, machine learning, autonomous vehicles, embedded systems, modular design and smart systems. In this process, synergies are created to maximize the benefits of university-industry collaborations with a “co-innovation” approach. The synergy created with the 360-degree cooperation model creates added value for both parties with a “win-win” logic and brings new ideas.

Intellectual Property Under the Intellectual Property unit within the organization of Koluman R&D center; the process of patent, utility model, industrial design and trademark applications in the field of industrial rights is carried out. The fact that every R&D project includes innovation by nature carries the company even further with the applications to be made in the field of industrial rights. The theoretical and practical training on intellectual property that all R&D employees receive periodically improves their perspective on this issue and reveals the difference between looking and seeing. The organizational climate in the R&D center continues in coordination with innovation, especially after the aspects open to improvement are completed with technical training.
Sustainable innovation, intellectual property and active participation in scientific activities constitute the triple helix structure of the Koluman R&D center. Koluman, which receives practical training for its team in order to raise awareness of studies that contain innovation features, in other words, have an inventive step, is also progressing dynamically in the fields of patents, utility models, industrial design and branding. In particular, a significant effort is being made to address the R&D steps within the project as inventive.
Innovation is inevitable for Koluman due to the nature of the R&D center, which is also considered a turning point. For Koluman R&D center, which offers innovative solutions to its customers and rapidly improves itself with the feedback it receives, innovative projects are becoming widespread in the company thanks to an organization that learns with continuous development. In this field, brainstorming by holding workshops at certain periods is also beneficial. We continue to design the products of the future with our roadmap shaped by the feedback of our employees.
